Legal Question in Immigration Law in California

Thank you for your service. I have a friend/business associate that I am collaborating with to write a television/movie script. He is an Italian citizen that wishes to spend at least a year doing research and writing here in the U.S. What are his options for residing in the U.S. for that amount of time without fear of being deported back to Italy before this project is completed. If the project is green lighted will he be afforded a work visa to extend his stay even longer? I will supply housing and sponsorship during this duration. Any advice or direction would be most helpful.

Thank you.

The only way that I see your friend staying in the U.S. for a year or more to write a script is to obtain an O visa. However, this requires proving that he has "extraordinary ability" in the arts & an advisory opinion from the screenwriter's guild is required. Moreover, a contract for employment is usually a prerequisite for this type of visa.
