How much of a source can I legally use without having to secure reproduction rights?

It all depends doesn't it, on the source and what you take. We can give you a legal opinion or consult with you on your project. But there is no simple answer to this question.

This is too fact-dependent to answer without MUCH more information. You should consult a lawyer directly for a more thorough review of the situation.

General rule is: NONE (0%)

UNLESS, the use is a parody (in which case you may use only the minimum amount required to 'conjure up' the original in the mind of the viewer/listener)

OR
