Legal Question in Intellectual Property in California

Creating software tutorials - Do I need Permission?

I would like to create some sofware video tutorials that demonstrate how to use a software program. The video will obviously show the software being used. Do I need to ask the creator of the software for permission?

Re: Creating software tutorials - Do I need Permission?

A video that shows the software would be a copy of elements of the intellectual property. Making such copies would infringe the copyright, unless there is fair use or permission, and the facts you describe do not appear to rise to the level of fair use.

Are you intending to profit from the video? How wide a distribution are you expecting? Do you think the company would oppose a request for permission? Are you a licensed distributor?
