Legal Question in Intellectual Property in California

Using photos from free access websites for profit

In the past, I have made customized cards for others using funny photos I retreived from free access websites. I saved several of these photos (for possible future use) to my PC and I would like to know that if I start making personalized custom cards now for profit, would I be breaking any laws regarding ownership (from the photos). This includes not just for the cards themselves but for use for them in showing examples of my work on a website?

Without permission from the copyright owner, you are asking for a lawsuit. Google [getty images lawsuit] for examples.
