what is the best approach in speaking to the Judge in a small claims court matter?

Glad you asked. Be well rested and reasonably neatly dressed; and eat a good breakfast before court. When speaking to the judge, address him or her as "Your Honor." If the other party argues with you or tries to converse with you, do not speak to them! Speak to the judge only. Do not interrupt the other party or the judge. At the end, no matter how things went, say, "Thank you, your honor."
