Legal Question in Intellectual Property in California

I am a student in a Game Design program who will soon be shopping his portfolio around and trying to get his work published. My portfolio consists of articles, original technical documents, original software, and other writing samples. I was wondering if there was some measure I should take to protect my work in the event it's stolen by dishonest publishers and prospective employers.
