Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Personal Relationships with Employees of another company

My company just sent an email asking, ''if anyone from our company has a relationship with any employee at .....''. Further, the email goes on to say, ''let me know if you have either a family member or spouse working for ..... currently I would greatly appreciate it. When responding back please state their name and the type of relationship it is.''

I really don't think it is any of their business if my aunt or sister works for some company...

Re: Personal Relationships with Employees of another company

It sounds like the company is trying to avoid possible future issues based on outside relationships. This is usually the tie to how they can request this information.

It does sound like the letter was not mandatory to answer (based on the language you provided) but without seeing the actual letter, I can not really make this determination.

When I was an HR director, we had a policy against dating in the workplace, but nothing against family members...we actually had many relatives working together. We found it to be more beneficial than detrimental, but not everyone feels the same.
