Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

My electricity is out. My bill is current, the company is experiencing no outages. This is solely the fault of the faulty wiring in my building. My landlord refuses to pay for an electrician. Can I take her to court? Also, I have about $300 worth of groceries that have gone bad. What can I do about this?

Contact the utility company as well as the local housing code enforcement agency. If the building is cited for substandard conditions, you have grounds for seeking recovery for the groceries, substandard housing conditions and possibly a retroactive rent abatement. On the other hand, if a building has poor wiring, you should probably also seriously consider moving given the risk to your health posed by these conditions.
