Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Establishing Tenancy

i've lived in this aparment for 14 months, six months ago a new owner took over and now he wants to evict my girlfriend and myself.we have no lease or anything with my name on it other than my basic mail that comes here.he's evicting us because he has been ordered by the city to convert my apartment back into it's origanal state, a garage. how do i establish myself as a tenant, what are the laws that would establish me as a tenant. i'm permenantly disabled and i would qualify for an 8 thousand dollar relocation fee but i need to be a qualified tenant, again i've lived here for 14 months. my girlfriend has lived here for over 5 years.thanks to whomever replys as soon as possible.

Re: Establishing Tenancy

If you do recieve mail at this address you should qualify as a tenant. If you are on good terms with the landlord then ;you may also want to seek a declaration that he/she has been accepting rent from you while you lived on the premises. That coupled with receiving mail should qualify you as a tenant. Good Luck.
