Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

I know that a landlord can evict a tenant for non-payment of rent or other reasons thru the unlawful detainer process, but does that also apply for the expiration of a lease? I have a lease on a house that expires at the end of this month. The landlord had previously told me he would renew but at the last minute he said he was not going to renew after all (approximately a week's notice). He says that I have to be out by the end of this month which is too soon to make arrangements, and he says if I am not out at the end of the month he can have me arrested for tresspassing. Doesn't he have to go through the legal process to do this? I want to leave but I just don't have enough time. Thank you.
