Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

I live in CA and was unable to pay one months rent for October, My landlord gave us a 3 day notice to pay or quit on Nov. 15 when we were unable to pay November's. We decided to move but it took us 10 days to move, pain and clean the house. In the meantime my landlord did NOT serve us with a 30 day notice. Now they are wanting the 2 months rent and money for damages. I guess my question is how does a 3 day notice work? it also was served by a family member of my landlord and was just a typed word document. Also my landlord is NOT the owner of the property so I am very confused on what my landlords and my rights are being they are tenants of the property owner also.

How does a three (3) day pay or quit work? The tenant has the choice of either paying the rent due within the three (3) days, or moving out. If the tenant has done neither by the end of the three (3) days, the landlord can pursue and unlawful detainer action against the tenant.
