Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

I have been living with a friend since last April. I do work for her in exchange for room and board. We have no written contract. She asked me to leave on a moments notice and has locked me out all night before(I have no key) Do I have any rights can she kick me out whenever she wants?

You definitely have rights.

Under your agreement with your friend, you are her tenant. That means that, to end your tenancy, she must comply with the law, such as providing you with appropriate notice. In California, the notice must give you 3, 30, 60, or 90 days notice to leave, depending on the circumstances.

If she does not give you appropriate notice, you have an action against her to recover your damages, such as your moving expenses, the costs of getting a new place on short notice, a hotel bill, if you needed to find a temporary place to stay, and other damages.
