can i make him pay back rent he owes?

i rented a room to a friend who was employed at the time, rent was on time and regular. without notice he quit his job and was unemployed 5 months. i allowed heim to stay. nothing was ever said. what can i do to have him pay the rent he owes now that he is gainfully employed again and still under my roof?

or do i even have any rights at all unfortuneately we have no written agreements only oral.
