Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

I am in the process of moving out of my apartment. I prepaid my last month rent up to 11/7/2013. I have been in the process of cleaning and getting everything out. Today (11/6) I went to pick up the last of my things and finish cleaning and the apartment had been cleared out and my things thrown away. No notice or warning. The office manager admitted indicated that they found a renter and wanted to get the apartment ready early and that they thought I had left and turned in my keys. She also said there was nothing they could do nothing about my things approx. $500 worth, plus prescription medications and irreplaceable and personal things. Do I have any recourse? I live in Northern California.
