Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

I currently rent an apartment and have recently been diagnosed with a chronic illness. Due to this illness, my income has been compromised and I am forced to make other living arrangements. What steps should I take and what should I expect from my landlord when communicating these changes?

An illness that affects income is not a legal excuse for the payment of rent. The lanldord is not required to lower the rent or otherwise adjust the terms of the covenant to pay rent due to an illness. You can certainly request that the landlord do so and it is possible that the landlord will work with you but it is not required to do so.
