Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

suing a aparment complex

I lived in an apartment complex property for almost 1 year. In Feb. of 2003, an inspection was done on the apartment the inspection revealed termites living in my front door with a inch gap to the outside. I told these people to fix the door. They did not comply, I contacted the health department, they came by, cited them for health code violation. 8 months later, I have developed respiratory problems with dark pigmented rashes on my upper extremity. I no longer live in that property. What do I do? What are the criteria for filing a lawsuit against an apartment complex? Or will this be losing battle? Do I have a case?
