Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Tenant rights.

Our thru-the-wall air conditioner broke and the manager said ''if we do it for you we'll have to do it for everybody here''. But they already do everything for everone else here. Now, it's so hot that my wife's epilepsy is acting up and our electronics are at risk. Question: Who is responsible for the air conditioner that was here when we moved in? I've already replaced it out of pocket once for $550.

Re: Tenant rights.

The landlord should provide safe and habitable conditions in a rental unit. You can repair and deduct in certain circumstances and appear in small claims court. The state has an on-line legal self-help center or you can consult an attorney.
