Legal Question in Legal Ethics in California

Adherance to composer's copyright by professional performer

I am choreographing a performance for a professional figure skater. The score essential to the skater's program is available only as a recorded live performance (on CD, sold to the public). Does the figure skater need permission from the composer/performer of the music to edit applause from the recording, leaving instrumentation intact as completely as possible, for use with the skater's performance in international competition?
