Legal Question in Legal Ethics in California

Is the use of my name illegal?

In 1993, I read an article in the paper discussing a missing woman. It described her vehicle and licence number. It so happened that later that day, I saw this vehicle and reported it to the police. The murdered body of the woman was found inside. The man who did it was found to be a serial killer, and is in prison. It came to my attention when my child ''googled'' my name that a true crime book has been written about this killer, and it reveals my part in the story using my real name. This is obviously not safe, but is it illegal? Permission was never obtained from me. Thanks for your advice.

Re: Is the use of my name illegal?

You have no right of privacy here.

Even though it isn't what you would prefer, you just have to live with this.

As long as what newspapers and books publish your name, and you have volunteered information in the public interest, there is nothing here that you can fight.

I can emphasize with your apprehension, but you need to forget it and move on.

Good luck! Thanks, 15 years later, from me for doing the right thing.
