Legal Question in Legal Ethics in California

question

A private investigator released my confidential information without my knowledge.

The report was not given to anyone I know. Not law enforcement, court, etc. Further, the investigator did not contact me. I inadvertently found out subsequently by an acquaintance.

No release was signed.

Can I sue the investigator?

Thank you.

Re: question

Yes, you can sue.

However, you have no damages, so, assuming you win, there will ot be anything to collect.

Many years ago, these were known as "one penny" cases. You would win one cent as a judgment, showing you were right, but there were no damages.

If you really think it is worth the trouble you can retain an attorney to write a strong letter to the investigator. Most lawyers will do this for around $100.

Good luck!
