Legal Question in Legal Ethics in California

I work for a vehicle donation company.

We had a person select one charity for their car donation.

Two weeks later, after we had already sent the charity a check, the donor requested to change her mind and said she now wanted the money to go to a different charity.

Can someone do that?

Otherwise I feel all of our donations are at risk if someone can change their mind so long afterwards.

If it had been the next day that would be different. Also, if people are unsure, we leave the donation on Charity to be determined. In this case, she never indicated that she might be switching charities.

It is a large sum of money and the first charity already cashed the check and doesn't have the money to send it back.

Hopefully you got their original request in writing. The only thing you can do is inform them that the money has already been distributed to their first choice, pursuant to their instructions.
