Sometimes, a surgeon will pack the nostril(s) with gauze to control bleeding, stabilize the septum, and help maintain the new shape of the nose. According to various commentaries I have read, these should be removed after a few days. Sometimes, the surgeon might even place gauze in the back of the throat during surgery to prevent the patient from swallowing dripping blood. That gauze should be removed once blood stops dripping.
