Legal Question in Personal Injury in California

I am 22 years old and under my parents' car insurance policy. All the cars we have are under my dad's name, including my car. If I get into a car accident (my fault) and the damages are more than our coverage, can the other party go after my parents' assets?

What if we changed my car's title to my name, but I still remained under my parents' insurance policy?

What's the best way to arrange this?

Yes, you could save your father some grief and some money probably if you put the car in your name, since he would no longer be responsible for your accidents. If you live iwht your parents there are insurance rules about deleting your from their vehicles coverages. Check with your own insurance agent.

If you transfer the car to your name you may want to obtain insurance in your name as well. Your dad probably has a mutiple car discount by having the vehicles all on one policy. Depending on how much coverage your dad has you may be able to obtain an excess or umbrella policy which would provide extra coverage at a small amount.

Consult your insurance broker for more information.
