Legal Question in Personal Injury in California

An insurance is going after me for an accident they claim happened on 8/15/12 to a vehicle I sold on 7/2/12. When the insurance contacted the DMV on 9/25/12 the vehicle was still under my name however the DMV has in their system a released of liability filled online on 7/2/12. The insurance claims it is my reposnability to prove the transfer of ownrship however since now the new owner finally completed the transfer the DMV doesn't provide anymore documents to me. Is it my responsability to provide proof of the transfer of property to the insurance or is it the insurance reposability to deal directly with the DMV to get a copy of the release of liability (I already provided to the insurance all the information I have)?
