Legal Question in Personal Injury in California

My son is 18 and driving. He is living at home while attending university.

If he owns his own car and has his own insurance policy, no longer being on our insurance policy, would my husband and I be liable should he have an accident?

If he is driving his own car and is not running an errand for you or your husband at the time of an accident, you should not be liable for an accident that he may cause.

If he borrows your car with your permission, this could also render you vicariously liable, but the liability would be limited to a statutory amount, and hopefully his insurance would cover the damages. (Unfortunately, most insurance policies young people get do not provide enough coverage to cover a serious injury accident, medical costs being what they are.)
