Adverse possession

can I continue a claim of adverse possession that someone else has started over 4 years ago?

I assume you mean can your adverse possession period be "tacked on" to that of a prior adverse possessor. The answer is "yes" provided there is complete continuity and the record owner does not briefly recover possession in between. Of course, a successful five-year adverse possession must meet the other criteria including payment of all taxes and true adversity, meaning neither of you possess with the consent of the record owner.
