A judgment lien requires a lawsuit, and a lawsuit can take anywhere for a couple of months if the party defaults to a couple of years if the person contests the lawsuit and the matter has to be taken to trial. If he or she appeals, there can be anywhere from another 1 to 2 years added on to the delay.

You'll file a lawsuit, and if you win the trial in a year or so, and if it isn't appealed, you'll be able to file a judgment which acts as a lien.
