The only way to get your name off the house is to sell the house. Either the wife has to purchase the house or it has to be sold to a third party.

True, the only way to get your name off the house is to sell it (or give it away). But that's not what you're asking. You want to get your name off the LOAN. There are four ways to get your name off a loan:

1. Refinance, which includes selling and having the buyer get a new loan;

2. Default and suffer a foreclosure;

3. Have the loan restructured with the lender, or current beneficiary's, cooperation; or

4. Pay the loan off in full.

I don't know of any other routes to getting your name off the loan.
