my landlord won't give me back my security deposit

my girlfriend and i rented a room from a woman and her son recently.the room was in very bad shape the walls had markings all over them and the carpet was old and had stains all over itfrom her dog etc.we had given the woman $500 1st month rent&$500 security deposit.she said she would clean the carpets and paint the room before we moved in.she never did and we were desperate to move in so i told her i would do it if she paid for the materials.she agreed so we painted the room and did the carpets.she never reimbursed us.while living there her and her son entered our room with out our permission.we gave her 30 days notice that we were moving out forthis and other things that were going on the house.we actually had moved out 3 days before the 30 dys were up.she looked at the room the day we moved out and said it looked fine but she didnt have our deposit and would give it on the 1st.i came back then she still did not have it.and said to come back in a 3 days she then told me to come back the 15th i came the 16th she told me that she would not give me my deposit becuase the carpet smelled funny .we cleaned before we moved the room looks and smells 100%better than we moved in what do i do to get my deposit back?
