Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Can a lawyer my brother retained but I did not, hold onto a check made out to me until he gets a portion of the check in cash?

I did not retain this lawyer or sign any documents of his, I made no attorney-client agreement with this attorney. My brother and he agreed on all matters of payment and I wasn't involved. The Lawyer now has a check that is made out directly to me, and not to a client trust account. He is demanding I pay a portion of it to him in cash before he'll release the check to me.
