Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Parent rents to child

My child, their spouse and baby want to move in with me for a specified period of time. I do not plan to charge them rent, except for their share of phone, utilities and food. What can I do to protect myself legally if this situation does not work out and I want them to move??? I've heard horror stories

Re: Parent rents to child

You are a good parent. However to protect yourself from not so good adult children you should enter into a simple contract that indicates that in exchange for partial payment of utilities and other duties relating to the home you will give them the right to live in your home. However make it perfectly clear that you can terminate this right at any time and they do not have either a lease, or other rental right.
