Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Renters Insurance

Can a landlord make it mandatory to carry renters insurance prior to signing a renewal lease? Lived here 3 going on 4 yrs. Neighbors on either side don't carry insurance and weren't required to at the time of their renewals. Other neighbor blew up his car in his garage last month. We think this is why they're doing it.

Re: Renters Insurance

Sure, the landlord can impose such a requirement. Mine does. As with any limitation or requirement in a residential lease, it could be illegal if imposed discriminatorily against a protected class, e.g. on the basis of race........but otherwise, it can be and sometimes is required.
