return of security deposits

i had to move from a house because it had a linking roof, and the rug was smelling and have no insurance. after i moved someone broke in a window. i return the keys and they are charging me for new locks. they want new rug,window,painting i lived there little over two years. they wouldnt let me paint. the rain would run down the walls. no fan in the bathroom. and the wall would turn black. they told me i would have to live with it. or buy a fan for the bathroom, myself. i wanted to paint but they said no. they say they have $2,811.40 work needed done. to the house i had rats coming in and out the garage, wireing hang outside the walls. I was shock once and ask the repair man to cover them but he had to ask first he never came back. i left a window for the repair man to put in becauce someone broke in after i move out. and i steel had the keys because the manager could meet me untile the next week after i moved.

Contact the local building code enforcement office about the condition of the house. If the building department finds code violations you can use that as a defense to a lawsuit to collect damages, or to sue the landlord for a refund of your security deposit. There may be a clinic in your area that will provide assistance to you in preparing either a defense or to sue the landlord.
