Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Do I have Sole residency of this unit?

I moved into a studio a friend had vacated. For three months I paid my friend rent via personal check. I then began paying rent to the owner. Five months after I moved in the building it was sold and I filled out a tenant estoppel with the new owner. For the next 15 months I directly paid the landlord via the manager by personal check. My friend now wants the studio back. I believe I have sole control of the apartment being I have paid the rent and used the studio for my residence and mailing address for more than one year and a half. Please advise me if this constitutes my legal residency/tenantcy of this dewelling.

Re: Do I have Sole residency of this unit?

Thanks for your posting. Because of your friend's abandonment of the premises, and your document with the landlord showing only you on the premises, your old roommate has no right to the premises, in my opinion.
