Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Years ago my mother told me she filed a declaration of homestead on their house, she has passed some years ago and i have no idea where these papers might be and if they would stil be in effect. Where would I go to look that up in a public record and IS it public?

It would be in the County Recorder's Office in the county where the property is located. It is a matter of public record.

........and if all the owners who signed and recorded it (maybe just your mother) have passed away, it is no longer of any practical effect. The somewhat limited rights aobtained by recording a homestaed are not inherited.
