Legal Question in Sexual Harassment in California
Confused and Desperate in California
I work for the state of california as a government employee. I am named in a law suit along with other individuals and my place of work for sexual harrassment and hostile work environment, etc. I am a party to this action because at one point i might have been considered a low level supervisor to the plaintiff--not because i actually sexually harrassed, but because i, along with management, supposedly harrassed when the party complained and didn't take proper action, etc. I thought i took proper action--reporting the complaints immediately to my supervisor, offered to move the party to another area away from the person that at that time was the subject of the complaint (i did not have a supervisory role over that person); and i asked the party to keep me informed of any further problems, of which i also kept my supervisor and managment informed. I very strongly believe the suit to be totally bogus and that the party is looking for money. But my question is to what extent is my house and other personal assets vulnerable, and how do i protect them? Thanks for your help. I've never been sued before, and this is very stressful.

As stated, there is information on the web about homestead exemptions. There are also a variety of means to protect your assets; yet, it is usually better to employ these methods prior to any litigation to avoid implications of fraudulent transfers.
As for you being named in the suit, your employer should provide you with legal representation. If, for whatever reason, you do not have counsel, you should seek counsel immediately to protect yourself and your legal rights.

Mr. Torrey - Since you are named as a party in this lawsuit I assume then that you are represented by counsel and would suggest that you do not give facts over the internet and ask him or her on how to protect your assets. There is a lot of information out there about Homestead Exemptions that would protect your home.

The best way to protect your assets is to hire a good litigator to defend the lawsuit, and to get you out of the suit as quickly as possible.
