When you're on SSI any amount over $2000 if you're single, (the amount may have changed) will be viewed as excess resource. Thus, disqualifying you from SSI due to excess resources. There are legal ways to deal with this issue.

Make sure your lawyer is on top of it.

Yes, you will have to report it. The failure to report it could have serious consequences.

Co consult with your attorney about how this will affect your status. If it is a settlement, you may be able to structure it so that it has minimal impact. On the other hand, you might have a reimbursement obligation meaning you won't get anything at all.

Make sure you talk to your lawyer about this and don't accept a nonsense answer. You need expert advice, and most PI lawyers won't know much about social security on a settlement, because that's not the area of law in which they make their money.
