Legal Question in Social Security Law in California

My main question is can social security take money that was won in a wrongful death case? And do taxes still get taken out of the money? My lawyer says social security cant take it and that the money isnt taxable but I've heard differently from other people.I got survivors benefits from my dad since I was 13 and they stopped when I turned 19, but if social security takes back the money thats like the whole settlement so I really need to know.

Money received for bodily injuries and emotional trauma is not considered income; if any portion of the award was to replace taxable income you would have otherwise received had the death not occurred, it should be taxable. You hired your attorney for legal advice; has anything he has told you not been accurate. Who are these other people? Are any of them tax experts? Have you contacted the IRS?
