filing tax for a deceased parent

My mom passed on in Feb,02.I have recently found out from the IRS that she did not file her 2001 tax and ofcourse 2002.Am I respomsible to file her tax for her.I'm pretty she will owes tax for 2002 along w/ any other year.the IRS said she still owes $3000 form 1999.

Can they make me responsible for her tax.The only thing she left behind was a life insurance policy that have already been disburse back in 2002.

Thank you for your inquiry.

The person probating or administering your mother's estate was responsible for making sure that a final tax return was filed on behalf of the estate for the year that she died. If you took upon yourself cashing out life insurance policies (even though life insurance is segregated from the estate), or managing her assets, you could be required to file a return and pay all late fees and taxes, for the estate, from funds that existed at the time of the death.
