Re: Got first dui & no license!

Welcome to California, home of the criminal justice industry.

Don't show up in court, hire a lawyer to go in your place. You will be charged with two misdemeanor crimes which each (theoretically at least) could result in large fines, substantial jail time, driver license suspension, increased insurance costs, and most importantly a criminal record that could keep you unemployed for years.

The lawyer you hire will also respond to any DMV license suspension paperwork you received (you must request a hearing within 10 DAYS).

The lawyer you hire will be able to discuss the facts of the case and possible defenses.

It is not clear whether you have no California license because you have no license, or because you just moved here. If possible, and it might not be possible due to your DUI arrest, get a California driver license.

Also:

1. Hire your lawyer WELL IN ADVANCE OF YOUR FIRST COURT DATE. This means start calling lawyers today, as we all have calendars that are constantly filling up.

2. Do not get your legal advice from well-meaning family or friends unless they are lawyers.

3. Do not plead guilty. Do not use the public defender. Borrow the money for a lawyer if you must.

4. Go to at least two AA meetings per week until further notice, and get someone's signature as proof you attended.
