Legal Question in Traffic Law in California

Pedestrian traffic ticket

I got a ticket for going through an emergency exit off the MTA train platform, I had no idea I could get a ticket for that, I looked directly at the cop who was in plain sight before going through the exit, he could've told me not to go through it. He Gave me a ticket and said I could contest it, and told me I would receive a letter in the mail. I didn't receive a letter. I misplaced and forgot about the ticket, I found it a few days ago, and checked it online, it was marked as a traffic ticket, it had been sent to collections and was seven hundred dollars. I had missed my court date, been issued a new court date, missed that one too, got charged interest or something and had my account sent to collections, and never received notice of a single action. I called the collection agency and after some persuasive arguement, they gave me a new court date. The code listed on my ticket is two one four six one point five, but I don't think that really applies to this situation. do I have options? the cop told me to go to court and say I didn't do it, and that he wouldn't contest, will that still apply?
