Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

My dad has passed away and has the title to a truck in his name only. I want to transfer truck into my name as the new title owner. There is no will and no probate proceedings at this time; can I do this parent to child transfer without getting into trouble?

If you are your father's ONLY heir (no wife, no other children), there is no lien holder, and his total estate is worth less than $150,00, you may transfer title to the vehicle to yourself through an affidavit procedure with the DMV.
