Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

How to gather Probate info

My mother passed away in November while living with a relative in another state. I cannot rely on this individual for information. How do I find out the status of my mother's estate?

Re: How to gather Probate info

If a probate has been filed for your mother's estate, you can check with the courthouse in the county seat for that area. The probate file is usually public information.

You could also write a letter to your relative and request information about the estate. Although you have explained that the relative is not likely to be helpful, you should at least make a written request for the information. This may prove to be valuable later if you need to show that the relative prevented you from obtaining information about the estate.

Another possibility is to hire an attorney in the state where your mother lived and have the attorney attempt to obtain the information.
