If you are a resident of a state you presumably get benefits by being in that state. As a practical matter, governments need money from taxes so if you live California wants part of yor money. But I believe California does not have an inheritance tax anymore. The federal inheritance tax has an exclusion based upon when the person dies, so you may not owe any federal tax.
