Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

Am I a legal heir?

My grandfather recently died. He had no blood relatives. He married my grandmother when my father was a child (never adopted my father). Grandmother passed years ago. Upon his death am I ( a non blood grandchild) to be notified as an heir of the decendent? Am curious.

No. You are not an heir.

Re: Am I a legal heir?

If there's a probate you should be notified. If your (step) grandfather has no heirs then the estate would revert back to your grandmother and come to you. You should find out who the heirs are and then seek legal advise. The problem comes in if the estate is worth less than $100,000.00 with no real property in it worth more than $20,000.00. Because then there's no necessity for a probate i.e., small estate exception.
