I am sorry for your recent loss. At a minimum, you are required to notify the Franchise Tax Board and the California Department of Health Care.

I would also suggest that you contact a local estate planning/probate attorney to discuss her estate and whether additional steps are required.

I would be happy to speak with you at your convenience. I offer a free initial consultation. My office number is (925) 362-1725.

Contact Social Security and advise them. I assume you have obtained death certificates. The other parties to advise are dependent on the assets in which she owns an interest and whether there is a will, a trust or an intestate estate. You should contact any insurance companies issuing life insurance. Contact her employer about any employee benefit plans. Determine whether she has an interest in an IRA or other enployee benefit plan. There are differing procedures for creditors depending on your circumstances.

I would suggest you consult with a capable estates attorney in your area.
