how long can an executrice hold up assets that should be distributed to the beneficiaries

Depends on the facts of the case. Provided a probate proceeding is in process, a status report will need to be filed with the court if a final account and report is not filed within one year of appointment or 18 months of appointment if an estate tax return was filed (706). Once a final account and report is provided and an order entered the assets should be distributed shortly thereafter.
