Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

The mortgage payments of behind on the home of my fathers estate of which we are currently determining the proper procedure of probate as there is no will, how do we handle the mortgage company, should we may the payments and inform them of our intent to transfer the property to us ( the beneficiaries)???

Make the payments to avoid penalties and interest charges. Inform them of his death and to whom they should now send statements [the person who will probate the estate].
