Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

I have been named Executor in my dad's will in the state of CA. A Living trust exists and there are no items to probate. After lodging the will within 30 days of the decedent's death, how do I get appointed by the court to carry out Executor duties?

It sounds like the will is a "pour over" will, just to transfer any property not already in the trust to the trust. Is that the case? If there is absolutely no property, why would you want to go through a probate proceeding? What executor duties would you have?
