Whose responsibility it is to protect an asset that was a gift from a trust?

If the gift was already transferred out of the trust, it is the beneficiary's responsibility. If it has not been transferred, then the trustee, (so long as it is not the original settlor or it is an irrevocable trust), has a duty to protect the assets.
